Privacy Policy

This policy covers the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) secretariat use of personal information collected by HFA-Pedia when you use HFA-Pedia.

From time to time, you will be asked to submit information about yourself (name, organization and email address) in order to receive or use services on our website. Such services include newsletters, online communities and closed subscriber-group workspaces, and HFA-Pedia membership.

By entering your details in the fields requested, you enable HFA-Pedia and its partners to provide you with the services you select. Whenever you provide such personal information, we will treat that information in accordance with this policy and aim to meet current Internet best practices regarding your privacy and security.

In the following statement, we detail all of the ways that we collect data on our users, and how we use that data.

Privacy & Cookies

HFA-Pedia takes your online privacy very seriously. Therefore, unless you or we explicitly state otherwise, any data that we collect as a result of your use of the site remains confidential.

Why then do we ‘cookie’, or collect data, on our users? Like many web sites, we collect non-personally identifiable information about our users via cookies primarily for three purposes:

1. to personalize our service for individuals or groups of users

2. to identify and validate user identification

3. to analyze our traffic patterns.

For further information on cookies please visit http://www.aboutcookies.org.

Log Files

In almost all cases, when you go to a web site, web servers log your interaction with the site in something called a ‘log file’. Standard log files like ours contain basic information such as what time which pages were viewed, the IP address of the visitor, and the username (upon login—coming soon). We use this information to analyze trends, administer the site, track user movement, and gather broad demographic information for aggregate use.

We reserve the right to share log file information with our partner organizations, with the aim of improving the delivery of personalized service, in the aggregate: We do not give information about single users, but may group individuals into categories such as user type groups (practioner, National Platform focal point, researcher, jounalist), regional groups (North America, South Asia, Caribbean, North Africa), organizational type (non-governmental, academic institute, private sector), always according to information provided by the users themselves.

We use "cookies"* to allow you to customize certain aspects of the site and to measure overall traffic patterns on our site. For example, cookies can tell us which sections of HFA-Pedia are most popular with our users. Cookies served by HFA-Pedia do not gather demographic information about our users, but rather user usage patterns.

  • A cookie is a small piece of information that our web servers send to your browser that is then stored on your computer. That small piece of information allows our computers to recognize revisiting users and also allows our computers to remember things about your past interaction with the site, such as user preferences.

Newsletters & Listservs

If a user wishes to subscribe to any of the HFA-Pedia hosted mailing lists/listservs or email alerts, we may ask for some basic demographic information. We use this information to learn more about what kind of person is using our site as well as to improve the delivery of customized services, and we share that information, only in the aggregate, with our partners and potential partners.

Reminders & Changes in Service

Periodically, we may contact our users to remind you of your settings and provide you opportunities to change them, to opt in or out (subscribe or unsubscribe), of mailing lists or email alerts while informing you of changes in service, including additions of new features or changes to online services or content available on HFA-Pedia.

Out of respect for the privacy of our users we present the option to not receive these types of communications. If there is a change to one of the services that you are subscribed to, we may send you a service update that it is not possible to opt out of.
