From HFA-PEDIA
The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) is the main global forum of the ISDR, on the basis of resolution 61/198 of the UN General Assembly. It is the main global venue for Governments and other stakeholder to assess progress made in implementation of the Hyogo Framework for Action; enhance awareness of disaster reduction, share experience learn form good practices; identify remaining gaps and identify actions to accelerate national and local implementation. It is intended to serve as the main global forum for all parties involved in disaster risk reduction; namely governments, United Nations agencies, international cooperation and financial institutions, regional bodies, civil society, the private sector, and the scientific and academic communities.
Background
In 2006, a consultative process was launched by the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, in his capacity as chairperson of the International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (ISDR), to consider practical ways to strengthen the ISDR system and better support governments to meet their commitment to implement the Hyogo Framework for Action. Those consultations served to identify a set of proposals, one of which was to convene a multi-stakeholder Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction. This proposal was then adopted by the General Assembly through its February 16, 2007 Resolution 61/198.
The first biennial session of the GPDRR was held in Geneva, Switzerland in June of 2007 along with the publication of the first Global Assessment Review.
The second Global Platform session is being planned for June of 2009, as is the preparation for the 2009 Global Assessment Report (first bienniel Global Assessment Report and Second Global Review).
