Global consortium calls for support to locally-driven investment in safety before disasters

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Mitch, providing a chance to reflect on how survivors have recovered from that disaster and subsequent efforts to reduce losses and save lives before disaster strikes. With climate change, persistent poverty, increasing urbanization and environmental degradation increasing the frequency and severity of natural hazard events, it is more important than ever to ensure that vulnerable communities have the capacity and support to protect themselves from disasters.

The World Disaster Reduction Campaign 2008-2009: 'Hospitals Safe from Disasters' is a global campaign being launched in Davos, Switzerland on 25 January, by the secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) and the World Health Organization (WHO), with support from the World Bank.The campaign will focus on structural safety of hospitals and health facilities, on keeping health facilities functioning during and after disasters, and on making sure health workers are prepared for natural hazards striking.

Twenty-four regional and national assessments were executed under the project Assessments of Impacts and Adaptation to Climate Change (AIACC) over the period 2002-2006. The AIACC Final Report and Report Summary present the achievements of the AIACC project in advancing scientific knowledge, enhancing scientific capacity, and improving links between science and policy communities to enable climate change adaptation. The report also makes recommendations for better management of scientific assessment projects.

The TV Show “Ante Meridiano” aired in the channel 14 in Colombia was awarded in the journalism contest “Alfonso Bonilla Aragon”. JJuan Manuel Cardona Duarte, producer of the show was received the prize for the their work on “Disaster Prevention and Response week” which was based on information from www.eird.org
Members of DELNET, the Nasachacha Municipalities Association and UN/ISDR secretariat participated as speakers in the show. The show emphasized in the campaign “Disaster Risk Reduction Begins at School”.

The project “Disaster Prevention in the Andean Community” PREDECAN (Spanish acronym) invites to participate in the contest Local Development Practices and Policies Facing Disaster Risks: Identifying Relevant Experiences in Countries of the sub-Andean region”. Introducing PreventionWeb

PreventionWeb is a new information service to increase knowledge on disaster risk reduction (DRR).
For the first time, a website will provide a common tool for both specialists and non-specialists interested or working in the area of disaster risk reduction to connect, exchange experiences and share information. The site is a project of the secretariat of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction. Prevention Web relies on content contributions from the DRR community and includes: disaster risk reduction news, country reports, publications, good practices, fact sheets, networks and communities, and more. The beta release period will emphasize content development by calling for contributions from the community at large – UN, international, non-governmental, academic, and civil society partners. Content Syndication: PreventionWeb is designed to distribute content in many ways, and offers the possibility of automatically placing content such as an event calendar on partner sites. PreventionWeb is now in a beta testing period, and will be conducting a series of usability tests over the next few months. We look forward to your participation and comments.
