Winners of the Children’s and Local Communities’ Risk Map Contest World Disaster
Reduction Campaign 2001 - Countering Disasters; Targeting Vulnerability

As part of the activities of last year’s World Disaster Reduction Campaign—Countering Disasters; Targeting Vulnerability—the ISDR Secretariat organized an international contest to reward the best local risk maps in two categories: school children, and local communities.

The contest was open to all children worldwide who sent their maps to the ISDR Secretariat, as well as to all community organizations, local health personnel, religious groups, local emergency committees, non-governmental organizations—in short, any group interested in participating.

It was not an easy task for the Jury to make a choice, but after a great deal of deliberation the following winners were chosen.

Children’s Category
First Place: Myanmar

Second Place: Peru

Local Communities Category

First Place: Nepal
Second Place: El Salvador
