Course on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in the Framework of Sustainable Local Development.
Registrations are opened for the course on DRR in the Context of Sustainable Development conducted in collaboration by the International Training Center of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Turin, Italy and UNISDR-Las Americas. The course is aimed to key players in local development management and disaster risk reduction such as policy and decision-makers and practitioners. More specifically, individuals from governmental, nongovernmental and civil society organizations.

II Hemispheric Encounter and National Mechanisms and Networks for Risk Reduction.
The Second Hemispheric Encounter on National Mechanisms and Networks for Disaster Risk Reduction: “Encounter of Santa Marta: From Theory to Practice,” which will be held on 14-16 April, 2010, in Santa Marta, Colombia.
The Encounter of Santa Marta is being convened and organized by our Government, through the Ministry of the Interior and Justice and its Directorate for Risk Management for Disaster Prevention and Relief (DGRPAD), the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (GS/OAS), through its Department of Sustainable Development (OAS/DSD), and the Secretariat of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), through its Regional Office for the Americas, UNISDR Americas.

Earthquakes caused the worst disasters in the past decade
 In the past decade, nearly 60 per cent of the people killed by disasters
died because of earthquakes, the Centre for Research on Epidemiology of
Disasters (CRED) revealed today in a joint press conference with the United
Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and publish
the disaster statistical compilation of 2009.

RICARDO MENA APPOINTED REGIONAL COORDINATOR OF UNISDR SECRETARIAT REGIONAL OFFICE FOR THE AMERICAS
The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) secretariat announced the appointment of Ricardo Mena as Regional Coordinator for the Americas at the UNISDR regional office in Panama City, Panama.

Mr. Mena is an international expert with more than 20 years of experience in risk, crisis and disaster management, and has served in the United Nations for the last 16 years in Latin America, Geneva and New York. Prior to his involvement with the UN, he worked with disaster preparedness and mitigation in Ecuador and neighbouring countries. His academic background includes studies in business administration and data processing at the State University of New York and a master's degree in risk, crisis and disaster management from the University of Leicester, England. |
